why do rc helicopters?

utilize a flybar on the rotor head, but full sized helicopters do not? I just found that interesting and wanted to know the physics behind it. you can be as technical as you want, it wont go over my head.

Any force that acts upon the helicopter, the flybar will dampen. That is how the flybar stabilizes a helicopter.

Think of it this way:

Take a bicycle wheel, hold it by an axle flat like a saucer. Without it spinning, try try to move it around, twisting and turning your wrist. That should be fairly easy. Now do the same thing, but spin the wheel. Now it should be considerably harder to move the wheel around.

Another example:

Pour water into a round cylinder about half way. Now move the cylinder around and watch as the water dampens your every move. Now picture a rotating flybar on top of the water surface making the same movements. If you do the same to the cylinder with no water it will be easier to move.

Also, even full sized helicopters incorporate flybars. If you look at a Huey, you will see a flybar on the head. It is very small compared to the main rotor, but it is still a flybar. Other helicopters incorporate a flybarless stabilization system, like a gyroscope for example. Usually full size helicopters have a mechanical or electronic system, while the newest RC helis incorporate electronic stabilization in the form of a 3-axis gyroscope to stabilize it’s yaw, pitch and roll movements. Flybars are seen more often in RC helis because their small size makes them more susceptible to the forces that make all helicopters unstable, like wind, rotor wash, rotational forces, etc. However…technology is making it easier not to mention cheaper to make RC helis flybarless due to improvements in gyros and flybars will probably eventually be phased out.

Playing With The Radio Controlled Esky Helicopters

The radio controlled Esky helicopters run the gamut from the small electric remote controlled helicopters to the larger gas-operated radio controlled helicopters. Also known as E-Sky Helicopters, they produce remote controlled helicopters for everyone from the novice to the expert.

The designs of the E-Sky RC Helicopters often include fully adjustable flybar weights that allow you to adjust the controls for a choice between ease of handling and performance. The contra rotating rotors decrease the shear and the torque often associated with Helicopter flight.
