I have to design a car which will propell and stop after 5 metres.?

The design will be simple with a clockwork motor as propulsion and a rack and pinion for a break. The question is….. What are the calculations I have to carry out to achieve this?

The calculation is rather easy – you could count the motor revolutions.

First you need to know the gear ratio – or how many revs of the motor gets you one rev of the drive wheel.

Second, you need to know the diameter of the drive wheel.

Here’s a sample calculation for a gear ratio (GR1) of 2:1 (2 revs of motor to 1 rev of drive wheel) and a drive wheel with a diameter (D) of 10 cm.:

d(car) = (1/GR1) x D x π x MR (motor revs)
5 metres = (1/2) x 0.10 metres x 3.1416 x MR

Solve for MR:
MR = 5 metres /((1/2) x 0.10 metres x 3.1416)
MR = 31.8 revs

Now from that information, you can get to a rack displacement.

First, find the gear ratio (GR2) between the motor pinion and the pinion used for your rack and pinion brake (obviously if you are using the motor pinion directly, you skip this step).

Next, note the number of teeth on the pinion driving your rack (PT), and the pitch (P, in teeth per metre) of the rack itself.

The equation for this step is:
d(rack) = MR x (1/GR2) x PT / P

Another sample calculation for a gear ratio (GR2) of 10:1 (10 revs of motor to 1 rev of drive pinion), a drive pinion with 20 teeth (PT), and a rack with a pitch (P) of 300 teeth/metre.:

d(rack) = MR x (1/GR2) x PT / P
d(rack) = 31.8 revs x 1/10 x 20 / 300
d(rack) = 0.21 metres rack displacement
