whats the difference between all purpose fiber glass resin and marine grade or automotive?about how heavy does it dry?and can i mix epoxy or polyurethane to make it more rigid?

There is no distinction between ‘all-purpose’ and ‘marine grade’ fiberglass resins.

There is a big distinction between the two types of different resins. They are: polyester and epoxy.

Polyester resin is mainly used in boatbuilding for the construction of boat hulls and superstructures and the repair of them. It is the origin of the phrase ‘glass reinforced plastic’ or GRP for short. (The resin being the ‘plastic’ and the various weaves of glass matting used being the ‘reinforcement’).

Epoxy resin, although it has been around since its development during World War 2 (ahead of polyester) is a vastly more versatile product. It is widely used in modern boatbuilding in the construction, repair and restoration of wooden vessels. As well as a base material in finishing operations underneath polyurethane (ideally) paints and varnishes.

It was used during WW2, in aviation, most famously in the construction of the de Havilland Mosquito.

For the full low-down on the huge subject area of wood-epoxy boatbuilding, see The Gougeon Brothers On Boat Construction.

There is essentially no reason (even economic – as both types are expensive materials) why ‘GRP’ vessels should not be constructed using epoxies although I have never come across it myself, and I have been in boatbuilding for many years. As indicated, it is mainly used in wooden boat construction as the main, modern ‘weather-boil-proof’ (WBP) adhesive. (Superseding products such as resorcinol and urea formaldehyde resins).

Glass-reinforcement is used in conjunction with epoxy resin in so-called ’sheathing’ operations – where a super-strong, thick and impervious layer of resin, reinforced with a layer of glass, is used to protect particularly vulnerable areas such as coachroofs and the hull below the waterline (and sometimes the whole hull).

It is important to remember to use the correct type of glass matting depending upon which type of resin system you are working with.

Each tiny strand of glass that is used to weave the matting has a ‘finish’ applied to it in production that is designed to facilitate maximum ‘wetting out’ – it just means that the resin attaches itself to the glass with maximum adhesion.

For polyester resins, specify a glass matting with a ‘volene’ finish.

For epoxy resins, specify a glass matting with a ’silane’ finish.

Never mix the two types of resin together ‘in the pot’ as it were – ie: never mix any of the chemicals associated with either system together.

(Although the tool-cleaning agent – acetone – for polyesters can effectively be used for epoxies too).

There is essentially, however, no reason why the two systems should not be combined just so long as one of them has cured when you apply the new one. (You could for example quite acceptably make a repair to a polyester structure using an epoxy resin).

But as I said above, there is no distinction between ‘all-purpose’ and ‘marine grade’ fiberglass resins.

Resin is resin.

Take care, for they are all volatile and sensitizing materials which also give off hazardous and inflammable vapours. The most poisonous of which from the point of view of respiration being the ’styrene’ in polyester resin – it is used as a monomer: binding the resin molecules into long chains, and is the chemical which gives polyester its characteristic odor.

Hope that clears it all up for you.

Good luck.

How Spun Glass Produces the Most Exquisite Artistic Effects

Modern and even post-modern art forms rely on the use of spun glass for some of the most exquisite artistic effects achieved in terms of un-paralleled sculptural forms. Resulting from the formation of liquid glass into threads, spun glass lies at the basis of interior design trends, by the ability to allow the modeling of all sorts of colored shapes and patterns that would not be possible otherwise.

True pieces of art, spun glass figurines are widely used for home decorations; they come in a large variety of sizes and colors, not to mention that one can even make them at home. Spun glass figurines make a really inspired gift for special occasions such as weddings, thus you can elegantly offer a themed spun glass figurine to the bride. Sometimes spun glass figurines make the toppers for the wedding cakes for instance.

Spun glass design objects are usually miniatures since the fine glass fiber allows the creation of very delicate pieces. Though the manufacturing process may seem a little difficult, spun glass is pretty cheap, as well as common in gift shops. You can either purchase a model or style that has drawn your attention in particular or you can place an order with the manufacturer to have a figurine custom-made for a special occasion.

Large spun glass objects are also available, but, due to the fact that they are a lot more difficult to manufacture, they are pretty expensive. Placed in a living room, an exquisite spun glass statue will accent the room features particularly if we are talking about one-of-a-kind creation. Sometimes, the value of a spun glass statue “sculpture” matches that of a classic art object.

A trend that has become more and more powerful is that of using spun glass in the creation of luxurious house decorations. Some of the figurines created nowadays may look pretty extravagant to a critical eye, and the same affirmation stands valid for the use of spun glass chandeliers in various house areas. Those people who get to own a large and complex piece of spun glass often learn to treasure it as a rare artwork.

Where can one place spun glass figurines? Since they usually accent a certain location, you can use them in the china cabinet or on the fireplace mantels when the figurines are small-sized. Make sure that the colors and the style of the objects match the room decorative pattern. For medium-sized spun glass objects, you may choose stands, tables or hutches, while the large items require special corners, with lots of room around so that all of the artistic details may stand out.
