carbon dioxide pump help?

i just made one…. i used a 2 litre bottle, airline tubing, water, and nutrafin activator and stabilizer……but my question is its the refill paks and idk how many to use or if there even ok to use carbon dioxide pump….can you answer please im kinda skitish ha
on the end of the airline tubing is a sponge so the c02 can escape diffused, is this ok also?

Any diffuser that just causes bubbles doesn’t do a very good job diffusing CO2 into the water. There are a couple things I have done to diffuse CO2 more effectively.

First, was having the CO2 line attach to a powerhead. The water coming up mixes with the CO2. It’s a lot better than just bubbling CO2 in the water.

Second, having the CO2 go into the filter intake. I don’t really recommend this however. A lot of the CO2 is lost in the filter and it can damage the rubber seals and ruin your filter.

Third, and most effective, was put together a chamber to catch the CO2, and pump water from the tank through it. Similar to this: http://www.csd.net/~cgadd/aqua/diy_reactor.htm

I never bought into the activator and stabilizer stuff.. I just use sugar and yeast.

You’re right to be skittish. CO2 can be deadly for fish unless you monitor it closely and make sure that too much isn’t getting into the water. Keep an eye on your pH as CO2 will lower that as well.
